Solar Light Placement, Light Modes and Care

Choose solar lighting by where it will mount and the effect you want in your outdoor space. Newman Outdoor Works offers lights for fence and deck posts, plus stake-mounted lights for gardens, flower beds, and walkways.

Post-mounted lights or garden stake lights?

Fence and deck posts: Choose a solar post cap light or solar post lantern. Measure the actual outside width and depth of the post or sleeve, then check the model's fit and any included adapter. Our post-cap sizing guide explains nominal 4×4 and 6×6 measurements.

Gardens and pathways: Choose a solar landscape light. These models use a ground stake. The lantern-style landscape lights are designed for stake mounting; a lantern shape does not make a model a hanging fixture. Check each listing for its included stake and any riser.

Find a location with good sunlight

Place the solar panel where it can receive direct sunlight during the day. Check the location at more than one time of day: a tree, fence, porch roof, or nearby building can shade it as the sun moves. Charging and nighttime performance vary with sunlight, weather, season, and placement.

Keep the panel clear of leaves, soil, and other debris. For models with automatic dusk operation, avoid placing the light directly beside a bright nighttime fixture that could interfere with its light sensor.

Cool white or warm white?

Our standard solar LED unit has a White–Off–Warm switch. Choose cool white for a crisp appearance or warm white for a softer glow. Set the switch to the light mode you want before evaluating the light after dark.

Edison-style models use their own bulb design. Check the specific listing for lighting features; the standard LED's two-mode switch is not a feature of every bulb in the catalog.

Position lights around plants and walkways

Allow room for plants to grow without covering the panel or light. Keep stake lights clear of walking routes and lawn equipment. Check the included riser height on the product page when comparing models; a riser changes the lantern's position above the stake.

Choose placement for the decorative effect shown in the product listing. Do not assume a decorative solar light will provide the same illumination as a wired floodlight.

Care and replacement parts

Gently remove dirt from the panel and exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners and follow the care information supplied with the light. If performance changes, first check panel cleanliness, daytime shade, the selected switch mode, and nearby nighttime lighting.

For a replacement, match the part to your product's listing or part number. Shop compatible solar light units and risers, or contact us for help matching a part.
